About 90% of all water samples are taken by volunteers
The Is It Clean initiative wouldn’t be possible without you.

What volunteers do
Volunteers are trained before the monitoring season, often in mid-spring. This ensures they understand proper sampling techniques and quality control measures.

Most partner organizations provide the necessary sampling equipment, including sterile containers, and other tools.

Volunteers usually follow a set schedule, often weekly, based on the requirements of their local monitoring program. However, some flexibility may be allowed depending on the volunteer’s availability and the site’s needs.

Volunteers visit designated monitoring sites to collect water samples and transport them to the lab following standardized protocols.

“This is one way I can show my love for the river, by helping provide a health check and keeping other river-lovers informed as to how they're doing!”
